Saturday Sequel Presents Goosebumps 2 Haunted Halloween
By Paul Anthony
Let’s be honest, if you wee a kid in the 90’s growing up you know you read a Goosebumps book and even watched the show, heck to this day I still read the books and watch the show and I was even pumped to learn the show was coming back, which the wait is just getting longer and longer because of this virus but as a fanboy I have to say I was super excited when I heard about a movie that was being made. At first I was wondering if they would do the books in order which they would have tons of material for, however I was wrong, when the first film was released it was about the goosebumps book monsters coming alive, after the release I finally got behind that film and even the ending had set up a good plot for part 2. I knew there would be a part 2 because the film made 158 million from a budget that was around 84 million, with a story in place, we got a stand alone sequel that barely had any ties to the first. The film had a budget of 35 million and grossed 93 million which was basically on par with the first film. The movie went through 2 title changes, when it was first announced it was called Goosebumps: HorrorLand then got changed to Goosebumps: Slappy’s Revenge, only to get changed to Goosebumps: Haunted Halloween. Though this was a stand alone sequel it more felt like soft reboot with only mentioning that Slappy was involved in another situation like this.
The film starts in a small town in New York, here we meet the main characters of Sarah, whose trying to get into college and her brother Sonny and his best friend Sam. One day as Sonny and Sam was picking up trash in which they want to start garbage cleaning up service, they stumble on a book and Slappy without knowing they read a few words from this unfinished book that awakes Slappy. At first Slappy appears to be nice to them calling them his family but begins to use his powers to cause problems and harm around the people that are close to Sarah including her boyfriend. At this point Slappy heightens his powers to bring the monsters of Goosebumps alive and pretty much all Halloween decorations alive and turn them into monsters as well, story basically comes out that Slappy plans to Sarah’s mom into a dummy like him so he can have a mother who won’t abandon him like his father who it’s revealed to be R.L. Stine himself. Much like the first film the key to stopping Slappy is the unfinished book to catch him with. Unlike the first film Stine doesn’t need to finish the book to catch him, they just need to open the book and it will suck him in and of course the battle begins but the kids managed to save the day but when Stine returns home he see’s Slappy waiting for him and use the book on Stine which sucks Stine into the book leaving Slappy with the last laugh.
I did enjoy the movie but would have enjoyed the movie more if it was the first film. The fact that this film did feel like a soft reboot and nearly ignored all of the events of the first film only to reword the plot felt lazy to me. When you considered that nothing was explain on how Slappy got to New York and Stine not having his daughter with him and everything. The rumor was that there was two scripts with this film one with Jack Black and the other without him, I feel like they decided to mix the two scripts because Black was hardly in the film and was pretty useless in the film. This may have not been a reboot but it felt like one. In the end though I am giving it B for a grade it had it moments and potential to be even better but someone got lazy.
Sequel Saturday presents Sister Act 2: back In The Habit
By Paul Anthony
With Black History month coming to an end, I decided to review a sequel that honestly I long have forgotten about. Whoopi Goldberg has been famous in this generation for being a talk show host and all of that fun stuff but for previous generations she was a comedian and a actress. One of her more famous roles was in the Sister Act franchise, which she played Deloris Van Cartier / Sister Mary Clarence. the first film of the series proved to be a big box office hit because the budget was 31 million and the movie grossed 231 million and when you make a 200 million dollar profit you know a sequel would soon follow and they didn’t waste no time. Just under two years and honestly it doesn’t seem like because the first film came out in 1992 and part 2 came out 1993 just towards the end of the year. Now with rushing a sequel would it be better than the first better question would it do better? Well the budget was 38 million just 7 million higher than the first film but the gross was far lower than 231 million in fact it did not even clear 100 million. The total gross came to 57.3 million which basically made it disappointment but was it really that bad?
Sometimes when a movie comes out and its a hit but the story proves that it doesn’t need to be a sequel. I felt like this was the case but here we are. In this film since the events of the first film Deloris is a headliner in Vegas and all seems to be going well until her old nun friends come to see her with some bad news. The nuns are actually teachers at St. Francis Academy where Deloris went as a child. Problem is the school is going to close if the school’s reputation does not change. So the Nuns need her to be Sister Mary once more and teach Music because the school use to be good in music, where they won awards and everything, so they need her to teach music and get these kids to sing. The problem is the school’s administrator, Mr. Crisp, who wants to shut the school down and retire. Sister Mary now has to deal with him and getting these kids to see that they have beautiful voices. In the end everything works out well because they school win the state championship in Choir. Of course Sister Mary saves the day and the school and once again she part ways for Vegas until she is needed again.
Now I will have to say this movie didn’t have the magic and charm of the first one and jokes well flat. To be honest it felt like the cast was tired and didn’t want to return. The acting from the rest of the cast seem stiffed at times and the plot was predictable. Now In the end I am giving this film a C or 70 percent because in the end it felt like an average sequel!
Friday Roundabout 1/31/20

By Paul Anthony
This week has been a tough week in sports, in entertainment and everything else. I wanted to start this blog off with the death of a basketball legend and that is Kobe Bryant, who as we all know was killed in a helicopter crash this past Sunday but the news got worse as the hours went on and we find out that 8 other people lost their lives in this crash including his very own daughter who was only 13 years old. The helicopter crashed into a mountain in California on a foggy day. The helicopter lacked a system that could have detected the mountain in the poor visibility that the pilot could have used to avoid the crash. Kobe was a real talent among the greats, in fact he went up against the best of the best in their primes to show how great he was. He won 5 championships, two without Shaq once he left and people felt Kobe was nothing without Shaq. He grew as a player and a man from being cocky player then he torn his Achilles heal and came back a more intelligent basketball player, he refused to let the game pass him by. he will surely be missed so will the rest of victims of that crash.
Linda Hamilton recently said that she would be happy to be done with the Terminator franchise. Well I can’t blame her, I think she was the best part of Dark Fate. Sure the film wasn’t completely bad but no doubt it had to leave a sour taste in her mouth that she returned for the first time since part 2 and the movie was still a flop. If she truly wants to be done then she can be and it would be wise for her to leave because it seems like this franchise is sinking now.
This past week rapper/ actor/ producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson received his Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame. I been a fan of 50 cent since he signed with shady back in 2002, but I never realized he was truly a talent where he was making a name for himself outside of Rap. he started to act which he grew at and then he became a producer and director. Hard to believe that this guy could be so much more then a Rapper. Big Congrats to him!
You ever think “hey I should play video games for a living?” but you have to think how much could a professional gamer make? yeah try 17 million dollars in one year heck the top ten range from 6 million to 17 million of course. The Highest one of course is Tyler “Ninja” Blevins. I feel like I am in the wrong business here. Who would have known playing video games could make you so much money.
Sequel Saturday presents Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2
By Paul Anthony
TMNT or better known as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was such a big hit in the 80’s and 90’s, so it only made sense to make them into films, well here comes 1990 and the turtles made it to the big screen and they struck magic because the first movie’s budget was only 13 million dollars and the film grossed over 200 million and with that being said you knew a sequel was coming along and that’s where we get a sequel just a year later called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of The Ooze. The film was made from a slightly higher budget at 25 million but made far less then the first film. The movie only made 78 million. Still it made a profit but failed to reach even half of what the first film made.
So was the film just that bad or what because just a year ago it made so much money. Well for starters releasing a sequel within a year is never a good idea even if you have a large fan base sometimes fatigue just kicks in and then it is also could be the film itself. Here we go the film picks up a year after the last film and sees the Turtles living with April, still puzzled to why they saved the city and still have to live in the shadows. Shredder makes his return after the city and the turtles thought he was dead but this time instead of building the foot clan up again he rounds up the ones who didn’t get busted and seeks his revenge. In the mean time the turtles start to learn about their past when a story April is doing sheds light on their past with the green ooze that Splinter remembers and there he explains everything to the Turtles, though some feel disappointed that their past was nothing more then a mistake.
However Shredder sees what the ooze can do and wants some to help make monsters to defeat the turtles. Here is where we meet new villains Tokka and Rahzar who proves they can defeat the turtles but only are babies which mean they get outsmarted by the turtles, which forces Shredder to become Super Shredder from the ooze but in his fit of rage to defeat the turtles he kills himself. The turtles survive and are happy that Shredder is no more and life in the city returns to normal.
The movie does take a lighter tone to things and the turtles hardly used their weapons unlike the first film. For this reason many critics gave it a mixed reviewed instead of praising it since it went away from the source material. I don’t knock this film for trying something different because I don’t want to see the same movie twice and everything lines up to be a decent film. In the end I give it a B for their effort but would recommend anyone who likes them to watch this film!
Friday Roundabout 10/25/19

By Paul Anthony
Like any other week we are faced with so many stories and just not enough time to write about them so let’s get down to it and go through a few stories that we just couldn’t cover. One of the biggest stories was of course the annoying Cardi B who we know was a stripper turned to a no talent rapper and now has one film to her credit and now another film because she will be now in Fast 9, well I know Vin wants all the star power in these final two films but this is something that is not needed and Cardi B is more famous for her looks rather then talent and this casting could set the female film way back, I could be way wrong but we will see soon enough.
Now this this isn’t a movie thing but I do find it entertaining but Edward Snowden, yes the famous hacker who decided to leak our security systems because he didn’t like, he went on a podcast and announced that the moon landing was indeed real and it did happen, well there you go people it was all real.
Okay that was stupid I know but let’s get back to some serious business here, the Joker now has become the highest R rated film now, which means it did even better then Deadpool. The next question is when will the money stop or even slow down and predictions are putting this film back in the top stop, could we see a 1 billion R rated film? Who knows!
Now let’s cover some Star Wars news here, we now know how many episodes we are getting in the Obi- Wan series which takes place 8 years after Revenge of Sith. I still don’t how I feel about this show with Obi-Wan story pretty much being over when he defeated and nearly killed Darth Vader and pretty much did nothing in the 20 plus years that he went into hiding but we do know Disney is creative with adding and making stuff up, I know I am sounding like I am bashing the series but I am looking forward to watching it to see where it goes.
Keeping in the Disney umbrella, they are in fact making another Pirates of the Caribbean film, yes it is a reboot so there is a good chance we won’t see Johnny Depp, which isn’t a bad thing because the truth be told the fan base wasn’t thrilled with him anymore, just look at the numbers, though what worries me is most of the crew behind the camera which means they might not offer us anything new but still this movie is a long way from happening.
Justin will most likely going to review the Shinning sequel Dr. Sleep but what are other people saying? Well the reviews have been positive and even calling it the best King movie if not one of the best.
Now You ever wonder if actors get hurt on location when they do awesome fight scenes. Marvel’s Netflix show The Punisher which broke the character back from the dead, but what injuries did he suffer, well a broken hand, got knocked out, tore ligaments, dislocated his thumb but despite all that he is willing to come back as Frank Castle if or when he is summon again to play the role and I think he is the best one we had so why not bring him back!
America Got Talent and The Winner is?
By Paul Anthony
It seemed like a long but yet fun season, I saw acts that I wonder how they made it as far as they and then I wonder why some acts didn’t make it. Now this is was season 14 of the hit show and we had some cast changes. Mel B and Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks left to do other projects. In comes Terry crews who in my eyes could be called a disappointment because I once saw him as the next big action star but some how that never happened. The two new judges for the show was Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough. Union has a up and down career as well and Hough was a dancer who during the show seemed to be pushing people to the next round because she was attracted to them rather then seeing if they actually had talent.
We know now that America voted for Kodi Lee who at 22 is blind and has autism but when he was behind the piano he made magic with his music and the talent he produced and the emotions that came with it from his god given ability was just crazy and we knew from the start that he might become winner or at least the favorite and yes America got it right and good for America and Kodi. Yet as I watched the show and some of the time it was clear they were just wasting time with pointless stuff.
Some things did blow my mind with the results, Let’s go back to the forming of the top 5 I had Voices of service, Tyler Butler, Ryan NieMiller, Kodi Lee and Unbeatable. Yet that is not how it happened instead you lost Tyler for Detroit youth Choir, who had that underdog story going for them but in the end I felt like their final performance failed, the kids bless their heart couldn’t hit the solo performances mostly because they tried to rap and it wasn’t working. Tyler however had skills like no other on the violin and I did enjoy his music, every time he got on the stage he truly showed up, He was my clear second to Kodi Lee.
Ryan NieMiller had that magic as well and I think given the time he had to work with he could have done more with his jokes, I never thought he was going to win but finishing third was right where he should have been and I hope I am not wrong when I say he could have had us laughing even more.
No doubt These acts with the main stream attention they got will have good careers, will they though that will be the question and only time will time. The Show will return for a 15th season but that is next summer!
The Lion King Review!
By Paul Anthony
Disney has been having a great year so far and that is an understatement, let’s look at the titles they have so far, Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Aladdin and now The Lion King. Sure Disney had a flop or two I’m looking at you Dumbo but even so that movie made a good amount of money as well. Remakes for the new age can be tricky because you still have a fan base who love the 1994 film. Could this film live up to that film. Well I guess you have to read on and find out.
First I want to point out the things I do like about this film. Now the graphics were top notch which when your film is nothing but CGI which this film was then the graphics need to be up there and it was, there was only a few moments that I could tell it was CGI. The casting was another high point for me, the favorite was casting James Earl Jones Mufasa. Lion King is in fact a musical so the singing was on par with Beyonce leading the way. Sounds like there are a lot of things to like about this film but there are things that I didn’t like.
First calling this a live action film was joke and that whole campaign was just annoying, The Lion King could never be live action unless you used make up instead of CGI. Next the story was pretty much the same there really wasn’t any change which I wouldn’t mind the small changes that catches you off guard but doesn’t change plot or the outcome. Now some critics have knock the film for lack of facial expressions on the lions, I won’t knock them for that because they were trying to be authentic and lions don’t have many features, I will however knock them for a scene that they changed for the 94 film. That scene was when scar was getting his troops together and some compared it to the Nazi Army which made sense because it gave you an idea of how Scar was going to rule the pride land. In this film they changed it big time to something basic, I guess they didn’t want to get any backlash but you need to show scar as being evil and stressing how evil he is.
SO in the end I had to ask myself did this film live up to the legacy of 94? My answer is no it did not but that doesn’t mean this film was a bad film and I would say please take your family to see it because it still had some tear jerker scenes that we loved . Now what grade would I give this film and the Answer is a B rating. They did good but they could have did great!
The Passing of Nipsey Hussle
By Paul Anthony
When we think of rap music, what do we think about? We think of people who are clever enough to rhythm words together and tell a story while they do it. When we also think of rappers we think of gangs and people who won’t think twice about hitting someone. But with that being said we intend to forget that they are people as well. Sunday the rapper Nipsey Hussle passed away but more importantly the man Ermias Joesph Asghedom passed away. You would think I am talking about two people but I am really just talking about one person.
Not too many rappers give back to the community in which they came from but Nipsey did. Ermias Joesph Asghedom was born on August 15th, 1985 and was raised in Crenshaw neighborhood of south Los Angeles. There he went to school and shined and even asked if he could be tested to join his school’s gifted program. Sadly like many youths in his area he went on to join a gang. He joined the local Rollin 60’s neighborhood gang which is part of the crips. He began to rap and by 2005 he was sending out mixtapes and finally in 2018 he had his debut album and was actually even nominated for best rap album at this past year’s grammy awards. Asghedom started to go by his stage name when a friend of his called him Nipsey Hussel which is play from a comic Nipsey Russell. But now it is sad to say the past year of his life was the best and now it is over.
Once he got the fame and money he started to give back which says a lot about his true character. he even went to officials of the LAPD to set up a meeting with trying to end Gang violence. it came to an end when 29 year Eric Holder shot him three times with one of those shots was at his head. When Eric was arrested the police found out that he shot Nipsey because they got into a personal dispute just a few hours earlier.
Sad to say that a guy who was trying to end violence in his neighborhood gets gunned down in front of his own store. he leaves behind a child, a girlfriend, a mother and father and a brother, he was a family man. I may not listen to his music but from what I read he was the rapper that we needed in the rap game. I am sure Nipsey you will be missed !!
