Saturday Sequel Presents Dumb and Dumber to Review

By Paul Anthony

This week we are taking a look at Dumb and Dumber to which would come out twenty years after the first film and 11 years after the horrible film that would be the prequel called Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Het Lloyd. Which was just awful, the fact that, that film made any type of money blows my mind. In any case we finally got a Jim Carrey’s first sequel since Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. Well, I was watching this film I began to wonder how I was going to rate this film because of the timeline. Twenty years waiting for a sequel is a long time and styles have changed as well. What was fun in the early 90’s when the first film came out may not the hit thing to do twenty years later. For this film the reviews were more towards the negative side but the film still manage to bring 169.8 million from a budget of 50 million which was higher than the first film, which was only 17 million but given how Carrey wasn’t a big star yet the budget made sense. Now did this film live up to the first film, however it was way better than the Prequel.

The plot pretty much follows the twenty year gap in real life and the film starts with Lloyd being in a mental institution since he found out that Mary Swanson was married, she was the woman from the first film that Lloyd wanted to be with. It is revealed that Harry has been visiting every week for the last twenty years but he reveals that he can’t do it anymore and that is when Lloyd reveals he has been pranking him for twenty years and they head back home together. However it’s not all fun and games because Harry reveals that he needs a Kidney transplant and Lloyd bright idea would be to ask Harry’s parents which would be a good idea except Harry was adopted , however they do give him his mail and there he finds a old letter from 1991 from a girlfriend that reveals she is pregnant, though its not told to them that Harry isn’t the father but the two take the hint that he is and could get a new kidney from his daughter. So they meet up with his ex and the road trip begins. We basically get them screwing up things and pretty much doing the same things they did in the first film to proved the laughs. In the end They learn that Harry doesn’t have a daughter and Lloyd wants to date her, Harry is then rushed to the hospital but reveals to Lloyd that he to has been pranking him and doesn’t actually needs a new kidney. In a post credit scene, they are heading home and throw their milkshakes at a truck belonging to none other than Sea Bass who then decides ram them.

Here is the thing the more I watched this film the more I realized that this film would have been so much better in the 90’s or early 2,000’s when this style of comedy was a big hit and when this film series was still big to us. Doing this film just felt like they were doing this to owe it us. In the end the laughs didn’t hit me as well as the first film did. In Fact the film didn’t do anything wrong and stayed true to the first film but clearly this film was just 15 years late for it to be a good film. In the end I am giving this film a D for a rating. But it was still better than When Harry Met Lloyd.
